Children with poor communication skills cannot express themselves, understand others or build relationships because of weaknesses in one or more of these areas:

• understanding language

• expressive language

• understanding about how words and sentences are formed to convey meaning

• using and understanding language in different social contexts

Yet communication skills can be taken for granted.... communication is one of the most important, complex skills that we ever learn, but rarely do we support it or develop it in the same way that we might actively support, for example, learning to walk!
