Stockport Air Raid Shelters Tours

Surviving the Blitz: Stockport Air Raid Shelters Tours

In 1938 Britain was bracing itself for war. In Stockport the Air Raid Precautions Committee had a labyrinth of passages cut into the soft red sandstone under the town centre to provide an extensive system of underground shelters. Designed to accommodate thousands of people at a time the shelters were fitted with basic amenities, electric lights, benches and bunk beds, flushing toilets, first aid post and sick bay. Today you can step back in time and experience the sights and sounds of Britain's Home Front, wander at will around a core area of authentically restored tunnels which provide you, your family and friends with first hand experience of daily life in 1940's war-torn Britain.

Open 1pm - 5pm seven days a week.
£3.95 adults, £2.50 children.
Evening tours available.
